Pentatonic Scales Within Major Scale

Did you know that there are six different pentatonic scales found within the major scale? Each one corresponds to each chord in the scale. For example, the notes of the C major scale are:

C D E F G A B

The chords to the C major scale are:

C Dm Em F G Am

All of the notes from the following pentatonic scales are found within the C major scale.

C major pentatonic scale C D E G A
D minor pentatonic scale D F G A C
E minor pentatonic scale E G A B D
F major pentatonic scale F G A C D
G major pentatonic scale G A B D E
A minor pentatonic scale A C D E G

As you can see, all of the notes from all the different pentatonic scales are notes found within the C major scale.

I left the seventh chord of the major scale out of this because it’s generally not used and it doesn’t have a correspond pentatonic like the others.

  • This is one of the many great classes Desi has available. I purchased them all. It has really improved my playing. Seems like the more I learn the more fascinated with it I am and Desi has a lot of good stuff to teach.
